Brazilian Blowout & Keratin Straightening: Deadly Cool or Just Deadly?

Hair looks good, but what about your lungs?

The Brazilian Blowout (and other Keratin straightening treatments) are a relatively new and intensely popular way to straighten hair.  But lately, these products have come under fire for having high levels of formaldehyde in them!  OMG – that stuff is poison and causes cancer!  So does this mean you have to stop using the Brazilian Blowout or other Keratin treatments?  Not exactly.

As a result of these findings and the noxious fumes that come from this process, many salons have implemented new ventilation or outside spaces to do the treatment.  Manufacturers and salon owners also mention that while the treatment does have formaldehyde in it, lots of cosmetics and products we use have chemicals in them at acceptable levels.  So only after a lot of exposure would this be a problem.  However, it’s up to you as to if that’s a chance you want to take.

If you want to take a break from chemical treatments, check out my 5 Tips for Straightening Hair Healthily.

In a recent New York Times article, they explain about this in more detail.
