(Rogaine) Minoxidil

What is it?

Originally an oral medicine against high blood pressure, minoxidil is one of the most popular treatments for hair loss.  Minoxidil comes as foam or a liquid usually, but is also in pill form.  Scientists aren’t really sure how it works!

What kinds of minoxidil are there?

It comes in 2%, 5%, 12.5% or 15% solutions.  Right now, you can buy the minoxidil 2% and 5% over the counter.  In the US and UK, in order to buy the 12.5% and 15% minoxidil you need a prescription.  There’s also the minoxidil with Azelaic Acid formula.  Availability and minoxidil names vary depending on your location.  Other common names are: Rogaine, Regaine, Avacor, Loniten (Orally), and Mintop.  There’s also minoxidil with Medroxyprogesterone (MPG). If you want, you can buy the azeliac acid separately (it’s a cream).
